Cancer is treated using intense radiation energy to eradicate cancer cells. Precise beams are aimed directly at the cancer, while otherwise protecting the healthy tissue. The most common machine is called a linear accelerator (LINAC). To contain the radiation and provide access to the vault, sliding or swinging doors are built out of lead or concrete. Industrial x-ray equipment scans for internal defects (non-destructive testing) in a critical component or part that if left undetected may cause failure.
